FLAT KIWI ADVENTURES PROJECT

When a child is home/bed/hospital bound or seriously ill and cannot get out very often, Spirit Sparkplugs will participate in a "Flat Kiwi Adventures Project" with the child. Flat Kiwi Adventures was inspired by the Flat Stanley Project, with a few twists. The Flat Kiwi Adventure (FKA) is a joint effort project between the child/parent and the FKA host in different country to your own. SO far we have hosts ready to take flat versions on 'holiday' in New Zealand, USA, UK, Canada and Australia. The projects are about offering a child an ongoing exciting adventure to travel to another country through a "flat version" of themselves, when they otherwise couldn't travel abroad. Their host family will take photos and upload them to a blog dedicated to the child's "Flat Kiwi Adventure". The host will write blog entries and post photos writing as if they were the flat version writing and telling of the different activities that the flat version has got up to with their host. Its not only fun for the child, but also those they chose to share their blog with as others are able to read about their flat versions adventures and leave comments and posts in response to entries as well. Flat versions may stay with one host, or visit with a few different hosts, it will depend on hosts available and the child. Once they finish their trip their "flat version" will return home with a souvenir. The child will always have the blog, their flat version and the souvenir as a keep sake of their travels through their flat version.

Once the child has been accepted and paired with a host to take their "flat version" on holiday here is how it goes..

1. The participating child creates a flat version of themselves using paper or card. You can find templates online or design your own. It can be any size but A5 is best. The child can decorate their "flat version" as much or as little as they would like. Their Flat version will need to be laminated before posting. If you are in New Zealand, we may be able to help with this.

2. Place their "flat version" in an envelope and post to their host family for their holiday adventure to begin. An address will be given once the child has been paired with a host. The "flat version" can be folded at hips and elbows/shoulders for posting.

3. The host family will then take the "flat version" on holiday, taking photos, showing them the sites and having fun. Please note: This does not mean the host family needs to go on holiday. Take the "flat version" out when you do things, show some of the local tourist attractions and the things that makes your country/culture yours by photos with the "flat version".

4. The host family will update a blog site that is dedicated to the child and their 'FKA' holiday, this will include photos.

5. Upon completion of the flat versions holiday, the flat version will be returned to the child and included will be a small keepsake. The child will have the blog, the keepsake and their flat version to remember their overseas FKA holiday.

Please note:

- Siblings can and will be included in this project if we know the child has siblings. They will need to create "flat versions" of themselves and be posted together in one envelope. It will then become a joint project. Photos will all be taken together.
